The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a Holy Day of Obligation.

Holy Days of Obligation are those days on which the faithful are obliged to attend Mass.  In the Universal Church, EVERY Sunday is a Holy Day of Obligation.  The Church has also designated certain Solemnities as Holy Days of Obligation.

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the celebration of our Blessed Mother being taken (assumed) into Heaven, body and soul, at the end of her earthly life.  This Holy Day of Obligation has also been called the Dormition of the Mother of God.
